He found a rose... 2003

Photoshop 7.0

No References Used

This piece is set in a not too distant future, and the robot is on the battle field. Suddenly, something happens that makes him stop in the middle of battle: He crouches down, and picks up a rose he has found. The beauty of this rose sparks something in him, which in turn makes him become aware of his surroundings; he develops Artificial Intelligence.

My underlying thought was that he would then stop fighting, and explore this new world he's found. So you could say this is actually an anti-war/violence painting, in spite of the bloody imagery.

Again I used a new brush, again in Photoshop - this time "Oil Heavy Flow Dry Edges" - but I kinda feel I'm stuck a bit when it comes to technique. I am however very happy with the way this drawing turned out. I hope you like it as well. I used the "Wet Sponge" brush for the blood (at 50% transparency and with some altered brush settings), and the airbrush for shadows.

UPDATE:

I am happy to say that this piece was chosen by the webmaster at GFXartist.com to be "Pic of the day" on the 9th of February 2003.

I have changed this image a couple of times according to comments I've gotten from other artists, so it may look a bit different now from how it looked the first time you came here. I'm not sure if I have made all the adjustments I should have, but one thing I've done, which I discovered myself, is to change his knee joints, since he wouldn't have been able to stand up the way his knees looked before. So now the lower parts of his legs will fold into the upper parts at the knee joints when he stands up.

UPDATE 2:

The painting was updated quite a lot January 8th. and February 2nd. 2004.

The images on this page reflect these changes, and they will be noticeable if you've seen the earlier version of the painting.

UPDATE 3:

I decided to simply flip the drawing horisontally in March 2007, in order to improve the composition of the piece somewhat. So if you've seen a version someplace else on the web that was the other way around, that is also my drawing, only in an older version.

Since I've shrunk the image quite a bit from it's original size (the one above is about 20% of the original .psd), I thought I'd show you a detail from it as well. Even this detail is sized down though, at 50% of the original:

All in all I think I've spent about 25 hours on this piece, over a period of about two weeks.
