Lynx, 2002

Photoshop 7.0

Photo reference used.

In this one, I set out to try something I hadn't done before. I was inspired to try a new technique based on a drawing I saw on conceptart.org. The technique i used was to look at the reference image, and then draw my drawing "at a distance", that is to say, zooming out to somewhere around 25% of full size, and drawing with the brush at that "distance". What this does, is that you get very loose lines, and a more vivid, lifelike drawing. When you look closely at it, it almost becomes a blur of lines seemingly going all over the place, but when you step back from it, or zoom out, it looks good. To show you what i mean, I've taken these closeup shots of some areas of the drawing:

As you can see here, the lines look very messy, but it gives a great effect when seen at the proper distance. I did of course zoom back in from time to time to correct small errors, and to add some detail. In this piece, I also used a brush I hadn't used before. I kind of  "forced myself" to use something other than the airbrush, so that I could take a step further and broaden my range of techniques. The brush I used was Photoshop 7.0's "Oil Medium Wet Flow". I changed the brush size as I went along. For the background though, I used the airbrush again, to get that distant look. That way, the lynx looks focused, while the background is farther away, thus out of focus/blurred.
