The Unified Texture Pack replaces the Community Texture Pack, the Cumulative Texture Pack, and BlumenKohl's Micro Texture Pack.

The new, Unified Texture Pack is in effect all the three previously available texture packs put into one, single installer (two of the older installers were also known as: DX2_texturepack.exe and microtexpack.zip).

But that's not all, of course:

Included is Koif's (the project lead on the Community Texture Pack) last batch of updated environment textures which he sent me some time ago (not previously available).

As for my own textures, this new pack contains over 160 new environment textures and new textures for three not previously retextured characters. In addition I've went through the game again and updated most of the 50 Loading screens, in addition to updating most of the environment and character textures from the Cumulative Pack.

All in all, this new Unified Texture Pack contains over 790 textures and graphical files (.bik for instance). Since some textures are in various versions that you can choose from, about 740 will be in use after a full install, but over 790 in total is available.

In addition to new and/or updated graphical files, the installer itself has been made faster and improved since the Cumulative Texture Pack installer, bugs have been fixed, and the installer is of course compatible with the European versions in the same way that the Cumulative pack was. A couple of textures that caused glitches (from all three previous texture packs) have been fixed for this release.

A couple of original game texture glitches have been fixed as well, like for instance the Greasels, where I have added an alpha channel allowing transparency around their feathers/wings - as you can see in the comparison above. The "crazy stare" of most of the human NPCs has also been fixed (no comparison available, see in-game).

IMPORTANT NOTES:

  • Downloadable game versions like Direct2Drive and FilePlanet's HitPoints are not supported by this texture pack, because they are not identical to the CD and DVD versions of the game. Valve's Steam version is - as far as I know - supported.

  • In the event that the texture pack installer should prevent you from installing it, it is most likely because there are old registry strings left behind from previous installs. In that case, you can download my cleaner file, which will clean the registry of old texture pack entries and allow you to install it again.

  • The various Alex D. face textures you can choose from in the texture pack installer will only work when you have chosen the lightest skinned Alex D. version in the game menu.

Basically, this installer was made in an effort to make the install of the three texture packs faster, easier, less troublesome, and with the added bonus of getting the latest texture and installer updates.

One important updated feature for this new installer, is a new version of ibd_patcher.exe, the program that overrides the texture names in the game files, thus enabling us to add high resolution texture versions. Ibd_patcher.exe has received not only a technical overhaul making it much faster than before, it has also received a 'makeover', with a brand new user interface design and a new icon file. Kevin Boye has done all the programming, and I have made the new design. The new ibd_patcher.exe is under the right circumstances up to 40 times faster than the previous version. Yes - you read that right.

However - for reasons I get into in the texture pack Readme, it may sometimes be only slightly faster than the previous version, depending on your system configuration. Please read the "ibd_patcher.exe" section of the installer Readme (also found within the installer itself) for further info about this, and how to make it work fast every time.

The comparison pages linked to above only show you a tiny sample of the new textures, and from one angle under one lighting condition, so although you'll get an idea of the difference, I'd really advice you to see for yourself in-game by installing the pack.

Anything from toothpaste tubes to the huge walls of the Mosque have been remade for this release.

If you would like to tweak the game (for instance get a wider HUD, remove startup movies etc.), you can go to my utilities page by clicking the "Game utilities" button above, and download DXTool. It has a tweak page where you can change a lot of game settings.

I hope these new, high resolution textures will make this game a new experience, for a new age of hardware.

Regards,

John P.
